Acknowledgments
The ITRC Environmental Data Management Best Practices Team would like to express our gratitude to all who contributed and supported the efforts of the team to create documents and training materials that are now available. These thanks go out to (in no particular order):
ITRC staff, including Evan Madden, Devin Seckar, and Carolyn Sistare, have provided critical support and advice over the life of the team. Nicole Henderson, project support contractor, has also been an amazing resource to the team. And ITRC Director, Patty Reyes has been the guiding rock which our team has navigated from. We thank all ITRC staff for their help!
In addition, the help and support of the ITRC board has been instrumental. In particular, the former and current ITRC Team Leader Liaisons, Randy Chapman, Rebecca Higgins, and Claudio Sorrentino, have helped the team leaders in setting the tone for leading the team and are a large part of the success of this entire effort. Thank you!
These documents were improved significantly from their initial draft state by the many comments received during our Internal and External review periods. Special thanks go out to all of those who made comments and suggestions on each of the documents. We also acknowledge the tremendous amount of help and support gathered by the ITRC State Point of Contact (POC) network during these review stages and state surveys.
Absolutely none of what you see here would have been possible without the long-suffering assistance of our Program Advisor, Steve Brauner. So much of the logistical work of the team and the success of our online events during the lockdowns of COVID-19 are due to Steve’s tireless work. In addition, though not a data manager by training, Steve provided quite a lot of thought-provoking questions that helped to better shape the content of our documents. We are tremendously grateful for the work and dedication that Steve has provided the team over these last two years!
It is said when talking about great endeavors that “we stand on the shoulders of giants.” With that in mind, we take a special moment to acknowledge the work done by the International Conference of Environmental Data Management (ICEDM) Best Management Practices group (http://www.icedm.net/icedm-bmp-group), the work from which we based this Team upon. The four white papers produced by that group were foundational to the work of this ITRC EDM team and are cited heavily in most of our documents. We must also give a huge shout-out to the ICEDM co-chairs, Dan Higgins and Sarah Wright, for their help and support from the beginning, even before the team was formally proposed to ITRC.
On that note, special thanks to all who helped draft our ITRC proposal and provided support for that effort to get off the ground. Kurt Rakouskas and Beth Graves at ECOS helped us to ‘find our lane’ in this growing field of data-centric environmental work. Several staff at the Internet of Water and EPA’s Office of Water also helped shape our focus and provided instrumental statements of support. Most importantly, our deepest gratitude goes out to Meghan Eschbaugh (ERM) for the initial idea to start the team – not to mention her consistent dedication to the team throughout the process – and Chris Neumiller (Washington Department of Ecology) for her early help and assistance in drafting the proposal and getting it across the finish line.
Finally, we acknowledge the hard work and dedication of all of our active team members. In particular, we want to recognize the effort of our subgroup leaders whose efforts happened mostly behind the scenes, without which none of this would be possible. Each and every one of them took time out from their busy schedules and displayed remarkable leadership in developing the documents developed by this team. While all of the Subgroup Leaders and active Team members deserve much praise, the ITRC EDM Team Leaders would like to acknowledge several team members for their significant efforts:
- Dave Rich was very generous in providing the starting draft of the glossary, which was based on his previous writings on the topic.
- Julie Johnson was instrumental in overseeing the yeoman’s work of keeping the glossary up to date and organized throughout the writing process, all while also serving as a subgroup leader.
- Mary Cottingham and Dreas Nielsen, and their employers Ramboll and Integral Consulting Inc., respectively, provided graphics assistance for several of the more complicated figures in our documents.
- Evan Anway and Olga Stewart provided much of the impetus and technical back-end work for our interactive Field Data Collection Decision Tree
- And though they were not officially titled as Subgroup Leaders, Dreas Nielsen and Shauna McKellar provided significant leadership and authorship to major portions of the Data Quality documents and the somewhat impromptu drafting of the Environmental Data Management Systems white paper.
